Never! Never when this movie was announced did I think I would be excited to see it. I didn't think I would even want to watch the teaser trailer. And...I was right. I had no desire to watch this teaser when it was released last week. It wasn't until a friend of mine, whose TV and movie opinion I value, strongly suggested it to me. That's when I decided I'd give it a chance.
As a little kid, I LOVED the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers! Kindergarten Zak, was a huge fan of the Green Ranger. If you don't know, he came in late and he's sorta the bad boy of the group. Anyway, even as a guy that looks back fondly on his childhood superheroes, and frolics with delight when the newest Marvel/DC/Star Wars product is released, I couldn't get myself excited about this upcoming Power Rangers movie. However, that has all changed now that I've watched this teaser.
This trailer plays much more like a superhero origins story than a weird live action anime with awful overdubs. Obviously this is just a teaser, and we haven't even seen the kids in their suits on video yet. However, there's so much to love about this teaser. I love that this version is more alien focused, as opposed to.....whatever the TV show was supposed to be. The idea that the Rangers actually have powers outside of their suits is a great idea, as well. This opens up a lot of possibilities and hi-jinx for this misunderstood gang of misfits in their everyday lives. Overall, this teaser has accomplished what it was meant to do. It drudged up a lot extra interest that wasn't there before. All of this with a teaser trailer filled of relative unknown actors. Imagine the hype once we get more Elizabeth Banks (Rita Repulsa), Brain Cranston (Zordon), and Bill Hader (Alpha 5) on the screen.
Side note.....really cool to see Ed Sheeran is getting into acting.
